This session focused on sharing new writing while further exploring what love means and how compassion is formed. As ensemble members reflected on grief and identity, they also made space for collaboration and joy. Before the session officially began, conversations were lively. Ensemble members discussed the summer heat and the long walks to the session. They also discussed life in the facility, mental and physical health, and the importance of keeping an open mind towards others.
During check-in, the ensemble also learned that another woman in the facility had passed away, shifting the conversation to navigating difficult emotions during the writing process. One participant reflected, “You can’t have compassion without knowing pain.” A facilitator added, “You can’t have grief without knowing love.”
The evening’s share-outs centered on these ideas. One writer shared three pieces, including two poems and the first draft of a new script inspired by previous discussions. The pieces resonated deeply with the group, who offered thoughtful feedback and discussed ways the pieces might fit together within the larger production. Another spoke about rebuilding her sense of self after the loss of her wife, reflecting, “My wife was my whole identity.”
The conversation expanded as participants shared stories about family and the spiritual bonds formed through love. “I love you this much; nothing can come between us.”
The evening concluded with improv games and the ring, allowing the ensemble to end the session with laughter and high energy.
