This session marked an exciting milestone for the summer ensemble. As the halfway point approaches, the ensemble has generated a well-rounded collection of original work. This session shifted their focus from creating new pieces to revising, drafting artists’ statements, and discussing final show logistics.
The evening began with check-ins, the ring, and conversations about the upcoming schedule. During the session, the group turned in finalized writing for facilitators to count and copy.
Throughout the evening, ensemble members revisited several pieces and celebrated one another’s work. One writer read her revised commercial-style piece, prompting laughter from the group.
“It’s perfect, it’s fun,” one ensemble member shared.
An ensemble member mentions that the piece will be a good way to break up some of the heavier pieces in the show.
The writer: “Everyone’s gonna want some aid after those pieces”
Another participant reread a piece inspired by her having her life saved. One ensemble member reflected,
“It’s great, we all need a hero.”
The ensemble also spent time crafting artists’ statements. This gave the ensemble the opportunity to reflect on what kind of artists they are and what they want their audience to take away from their pieces.
Between moments of focused work, the ensemble shared stories and discussed future plans for the final show. With so many pieces now written, excitement grows for the editing, blocking, and casting process.
