SYSTEM IMPACTED TICKET INFORMATION
Shakespeare in Prison, Detroit Public Theatre’s signature community program, works with individuals who have directly experienced incarceration (system impacted people) and uses theatre as a catalyst for empowerment, community, and hope.
Detroit Public Theatre is committed to making all our productions accessible to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people. Formerly incarcerated people face extreme barriers and limited access to housing, employment, and transportation. Knowing that the below statistics also translate into extremely high barriers to access to the arts, Detroit Public Theatre offers a special and deeply discounted ticket price for system impacted community members and their families.
The Prison Policy Initiative has found that:
Formerly incarcerated people are almost 10 times more likely to be homeless than the general public
Formerly incarcerated people are unemployed at a rate of over 27% (higher than the total U.S. unemployment rate during any historical period, including the Great Depression)
For the roughly 600,000 people being released from prison each year, reliable transportation "has been identified as a major barrier to successful reentry"
