“We gotta make y’all do something.” – July 21

This session focused on unifying individual pieces into one cohesive production. Together, the ensemble collaborated on casting and discussed the order of pieces.

The evening began with check-ins and the ring before the ensemble turned its attention to the production. After weeks of writing, revising and hearing each other’s work, participants worked together to cast each piece. Some actors were nominated by the writers, while others selected the pieces they were most excited to perform. The ensemble also discussed how to incorporate artist statements into the show.

As the conversation continued, participants collaborated on the overall structure of the show. The ensemble decided to divide the largest piece into 3 parts, creating space for shorter scenes and monologues throughout the performance. The order of the pieces was also an important discussion. The group considered how each piece could build on the next to create a meaningful emotional flow.

At one point, facilitators asked whether the ensemble wanted help determining the order of the show. One ensemble member joked,

“We gotta make y’all do something.”

Later in the evening, the ensemble shifted from planning to performance. Participants experimented with music, practiced a rap, continued editing pieces, and played theatre games together. With casting complete and the show structure taking shape, the ensemble is ready to move into the rehearsal stage.
