In Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph’s slam-dunk comedy, superfans Matt and Shawn forge an unexpected friendship through a shared love of their hometown Cleveland Cavaliers. Spanning 12 years from LeBron James’ 2004 rookie season to the 2016 NBA championship, tensions mount both on and off the court for the duo in this hilarious, adrenaline-infused exploration of love, grace, and the power of a good game to bring people together.

Mateo Davis

Shawn

Matéo Davis is an actor and tall drink of water from Detroit, MI with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from Wayne State University. He’s beyond honored and excited to be working with the many talented people at Detroit Public Theatre who bring theatre to folks in the city. His previous credits include ensemble/production assistant in The Squirrels (Tipping Point Theatre, 2024), Hercule Poirot in The Murder on the Orient Express (Hilberry Gateway, 2024), Justin in Blood at the Root (Underground Theatre, 2024), Ezekial V in The Magnolia Ballet (Plowshares Theatre, 2023), and he’s currently touring with the Michigan Shakespeare Festival’s Interstate Tour as Mercutio/Paris/Prince in Romeo and Juliet, and as Banquo/Doctor in Macbeth. A tremendous thank you to all who support and love him from friends, to family, and definitely colleagues. He’s happy to share his love of theatre with all of you.

Alexander Pobutsky

Matt

Alexander Poubutsky can most recently be seen in the Oscar-winning American Fiction, Hulu/FX’s Justified: City Primeval (in which for five episodes he played an Albanian from Hamtramck, his hometown!), The Storied Life of AJ Fikry, and The Blacklist. Theater: Clyde’s (Detroit Public), Sweat (Detroit Repertory), Blue Man Group, Hir (Apollinaire), This Is Our Youth (The Hive), Soft Target (Detroit Public). No social media accounts, and so can you! And remember: you might be currently living in your good ol’ days! Shout out forevermore to his cat, Milo.

Meet The Creative Team

Courtney Burkett

Director

Courtney is a member of the artistic leadership team at Detroit Public Theatre, where she regularly directs productions. In her role as Producing Artistic Director, she oversees production and marketing. Prior to co-founding DPT, Courtney was the Director of Theatre Programs with Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, directing the internationally-acclaimed Mosaic Acting Company. Courtney was a founding Artistic Partner with Breathe Art Theatre Project and also served as Managing Director of the CRLT Players at the University of Michigan, and as Business Manager for the University of Detroit Mercy Theatre Company. Courtney is a fourth generation native Detroiter. She holds a BFA from Webster Conservatory of Theatre Arts in St. Louis, and and MFA from Wayne State University’s Hilberry Theatre program.

Angie Ayriss

Production Stage Manager

Angeline has recently made her way back to the great city of Detroit after graduating with an MFA in Stage Management at Wayne State University in 2004. She is thrilled to be joining DPT’s eleventh season as Resident Stage Manager. Angeline has had the privilege of working across the country with The Midnight Circus, Circus Smirkus, and The Oregon Shakespeare Festival. She is so grateful for the support and love of her mom, partner and two amazing kiddos!

Jwymon Williams Jr

Assistant Stage Manager

Jwymon is an ASM, sound designer, and Detroit Public Theatre crew member from Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2022, majoring in Entertainment Design and Technology, with a minor in Simulation, Animation, and Gaming.

David DeCaroles

Lighting Designer

David DeCarolis (Lighting Designer) is a Japanese-American Lighting Designer excited to make his DPT debut. He currently resides in Brooklyn splitting his time between nightclubs and theatre. His past design credits include Wish You Were Here (Yale Rep), Love’s Labour’s Lost, Little Boy/Little Man, Color Boy (Isman Theatre), The Hedgehog’s Dilemma (Yale Cabaret), Form of a girl Unknown (SLAC). He has assisted on Saturday’s Voyeur, three Little Pigs (SLAC), Today is my birthday, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Yale Reparatory Theatre), Seize the King (The Classic Theatre of Harlem). Matthew Eggers

Costume Designer

MATTHEW EGGERS (Costume Designer) is a queer midwestern costume designer. They are thrilled to be coming back to at DPT and want to thank Courtney and the whole team for the community! Regional: Detroit 67’ (Detroit Public Theater), RENT (Encore Musical Theater Co.), The Ally (Theater Wit), Bridges of Madison County (Timberlake Playhouse), Into The Woods (Yale Dramatic Assoc.). They have also worked with Seattle Rep, The Public, Hartford Stage, Two River Theater, and Barrington Stage Company as an associate/assistant. They have worked internationally at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and on Broadway as a production assistant. TAYLOR J. WILLIAMS is a Tony-nominated sound designer (co-sound design of Jordan E. Cooper’s Ain’t No Mo’ with Jonathan Deans). Previous credits include Lena Waithe’s stage debut trinity (Baltimore Center Stage); Oh Happy Day! (Public Theater); Duke & Roya at the Lortel Theatre; A Driving Beat and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (Flint Rep), and John Wilkes Booth: One Night Only! by Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner (Baltimore Center Stage). Pegi Marshall

Props Designer:

Scenographer, Detroit Native, Cass Tech Graduate and advocate for sustainable theatre practices. Pegi’s diverse portfolio encompasses theatre, performance installations, and parades. She has showcased her work across the globe, including New Zealand, Serbia, Prague, and various locations in the U.S. She holds an MFA in Scenic Design from University of Maryland College Park and is a proud member of USA829, United Scenic Artists Union. Previously, Pegi taught and inspired students at Baltimore School for the Arts, Morgan State University, Wayne State University, University of North Carolina, and California Polytechnic State University. Now, Pegi is mother of twins and a Licensed Massage Therapist. She is thrilled her children witness her journey – creating art for the stage and using her hands for both creative and healing endeavors.

X’ydee Alexander

Assistant Director

X’ydee (pronounced ex-uh-dee) is thrilled to return to DPT in a new capacity. She previously appeared in last season’s Fat Ham as Opal here at DPT and has since performed as Dussie Mae in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Ruthie in Covenant at DRT. She was also part of Flint Rep’s first touring production, The Birds. While best known for her work on stage, X’ydee is grateful for the opportunity to step behind the scenes, expand her artistry, and deepen her understanding of theater-making. She would like to send out a special thank-you to Courtney, Leah, Cassandra, and both her Parents. You can catch her next in Detroit Repertory Theatre’s current production of Eclipsed.
